Close-up of a great white shark with blue iris image

Old Blue Eyes

Did you know a great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) does not have a solid black eye? If you are close enough and in good light, you can see that their iris has a pale blue appearance. While the iris itself is brown, there is layer of cartilage extending into the anterior chamber that gives it a blue appearance. The sun happened to be hitting the eye of Cal Ripfin (aka Shredder) in a manner that really accentuated the blue appearance of the iris for this shot.
